Dutch beer: Traditions and trendsetting

Dutch beer has a deep-rooted tradition in the country's culture and history. With breweries dating back to the Middle Ages, the Netherlands has contributed iconic styles such as the classic Dutch lager, the well-known Heineken.

At the same time, the country has also been a hub of innovation and experimentation, leading to the rise of modern craft breweries and making the Dutch trendsetters. From traditional brews to wild experimentation, Dutch beer is a fusion of heritage and innovation.

Explore Dutch beer

Although Belgium often steals the spotlight when it comes to European beer, the Netherlands has its own collection of hidden treasures to explore. With a thriving craft beer scene and a growing interest in traditional styles, Dutch beer is beginning to emerge as a destination for beer tourism.

The modern craft beer breweries of the Netherlands are living proof of the enduring love of beer and innovation. Nevel, Moersleutel, Frontaal and Folkingebrew, among others, have all contributed to a burgeoning culture of creativity and quality. With a focus on brewing with wild yeast strains and spontaneous fermentation, Nevel challenges traditional brewing methods and creates unique flavors. Moersleutel, known for their experimentation with ingredients and complex flavor profiles, offers new experiences with flavors and aromas. Frontaal excels at crafting classic styles while bringing fresh innovations to the table, while Folkingebrew focuses on local ingredients and sustainability in their brewing process.

Although modern breweries have taken some of the limelight, the tradition of beer brewing still lives on in some of Holland's monasteries. These monastic breweries, such as Koningshoeven and Egmond, represent an age-old brewing tradition that goes back centuries. Their beers are often inspired by the old recipes and brewing methods that have been refined and perfected over generations of monks.
